Common. Corticolous on inihina (Melicytus chathamicus) and taupata (Coprosma repens).
Thallus dirty white, grey, lumpy but otherwise smooth and not cracked, apothecia 0.5-1.2 mm diameter, sessile or immersed, brown (not black as is usually the case for this species in New Zealand), rounded, subangular, radiating or stellate.
Ascospores 25 × 10 μm, colourless, ovoid-obovate, 5-septate.
As currently circumscribed for New Zealand Arthonia peraffinis is a variable species, especially with respect to apothecia size, shape and colour (brown or black). New Zealand "Arthonia peraffinis" would repay further taxonomic investigation.
