Not sure what this is for sure, loo large for most ground squirrels, doesn't look like a woodchuck either. Right by the corner of the new cow fence at the entrance to the Wildlife Drive
A bit out of range, so I'd love some second opinions on ID. Completely blond colored from what I could see. I have seen other observations of this guy floating around (some with better photos)
A solo visit as I was heading home from seeing the epic Gray Gull at Santa Rosa Beach this morning! This was my second visit to this road; Don Fraser and I got our lifer Yehl's Skippers here 29 days earlier (and we looked for but missed Broad-winged Skipper). There were no "good" skippers here today (too late in the season, I guess), but I got several lesser skippers and other nice insects. The weather at 1259 was sunny and 77 degrees ("feels like" 83), with a light breeze. This is the third of three stops along Mandalay Road. There were many skippers -- apparently all Ocola Skippers -- on a big patch of Bidens here; I tried to combine the same individuals into one record as best as possible. I left at 1422 and headed home.
Floricane about 2 ft long, arched above ground. No root tipping found in the patch. Primocane stem and petioles glabrous. No glandular hairs found anywhere. Photos 9-15 are the primocane. On a sandy dike next to open water.
