Covered with pine pollen and spent oak catkins
I was thinking I don't recognize this plant, but thought I'd just forgotten what it was. Nope! Never heard of hartford fern.
On dry hillside. In this species, basal rosette of leaves remains green year-round. Conspicuous flower cluster early in the season is followed by late season flowers that remain partly concealed among leaves and self-pollinate.
