Borrego Palm Canyon Trail. First sighting of this species in the canyon which I have hiked once or twice monthly for the past four years and intermittently since mid-1970s. About ten years ago there were nesting Prairie Falcons just down canyon from this location. Neither of the two Peregrines sighted were banded. They appeared to be females. One of the two had a missing/emerging tail feather. I initially noticed the shadow of one cross just in front of me on the trail and looked up to see them fairly close above me. They were probably perched when I approached this section of trail. Both falcons circled to gain altitude before departing westerly.
Finally a decent shot of one. They keep their distance.
Regrettably a roadkill. Small darkling beetles on it.
