Large tree growing in break in redwood canopy, 3-4 meters tall. Lower branches have developed foliage with more serrated edges as response to herbivory. Not flowering, but shows evidence of past fruiting. Growing in mix of rocky soil and detritus.

Leaves: finely serrate, alternate leaves, two ranked, egg-shape ovate, apex acute, sessile, venation ribbed, shiny
Habit: shrub, perennial erect, stem red/brown, group of four
partial sunlight, higher up on a 45 degree slope, height between 2-4 ft.
