I say Coop, my friend says Sharpshin.
I saw these waterfowl on the lake in Lakeside Park two blocks over from St. Mary's Hospital. Seeing them was an accident; I focused my camera on the water and hit this pair of birds. I got two or three photos before they disappeared into the water. No matter how much I looked for them they were nowhere to be found.
The map on All About Birds shows they pass through here in migration. The article says they can float just beneath the surface of the water and/or dive deeply. My grebes must have done one of those things eight after I spotted them. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pied-billed_Grebe
