Young branches are tomentose. This distinguishes it from L. occidentalis. Tree shape is unlike L. occidentalis.
Fourteen specimens of L.lyallii are reported in the Consortium of Pacific Northwest Herbaria. Nine of those specimens are from the Roman Nose Lakes area.
