Description

A solo visit because Deer Run Road, the road that leads to Perry Oldenburg Wildlife and Environmental Area nearby, was too flooded to risk Little Red. I decided to visit Chinsegut. The main entrance was gated off, with a sign that implied that there was no public access when the gate was closed. This was news to me, and apparently a new policy, as I have parked at the gate and walked in many times in the past. So, I drove back to very southern end of Chinsegut, parked there, and started walking. I walked counter-clockwise all the way around Mays Prairie and the entire WEA, back to the parking lot, a distance of 3.7 miles or more. There were numerous downed trees throughout the WEA (most of them oaks, but also some Longleaf Pines), and downed branches littered the ground. The woods on the eastern side of Mays Prairie were partially flooded from Hurricane Milton, but the boardwalk was surprisingly above water. These are my camera photographs; I have added the timestamp to each photograph, but I have no location data because my camera is not GPS-enabled. I have drawn a small circle that encompasses as much of Chinsegut WEA as possible without including adjacent private lands. (iNat will not accept sightings for a project if any part of a circle is outside the project area, and I am a contributor to the Chinsegut WEA iNat project). In truth, my drawn circle excludes most of the WEA, and therefore most of my path today. The weather at the start (1056) was sunny, 77 degrees ("feels like" 77), with a light breeze. I left at 1413, when the weather was sunny, 84 degrees ("feels like" 87), with a light breeze.

Description

With Don Fraser; a visit to see what was around. There was a lot of water around! The weather at the start was sunny and 88 degrees, with a light breeze (I had no cell phone reception, so I got the temperature from Don's SUV; the "feels like" temperature was probably 88-90 degrees), We drove North Grade Road, spent some time at the (graffiti-laden!) wooden bridge over the Little Withlacoochee River, then turned "left" onto River Road. We took River Road to County Road 471, then drove south back to North Grade Road, which we drove again to the bridge over the Little Withlacoochee River. We left around 1400, when the weather was sunny and hot (probably with a "feels like" temperature >100 degrees), with a light breeze. On the way back, we stopped at the Richloam General Store for refreshments.

These are my cell-phone images, uploaded before my camera images because my phone is GPS-enabled, thus automatically geo-locating them. I will upload "snips" of my (non-GPS-enabled) camera photographs at a later date. In some cases, I will replace the inferior cell-phone images of some species with superior camera images.

These are my camera photographs, which lack a GPS location. Instead, I divided these images into 5 groups by location, drew a generic circle to encompass them, and then listed the arrival time at each.
