What

Feral Pigeon (Columba livia var. domestica)

Observer

Description

These pigeons were seen huddling around a fire pit near Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago. There was a significant amount of wind chill, and the weather was cloudy and 33 degrees Fahrenheit. It was interesting to see how these pigeons stayed near their flock, and very few of them ventured away from the fire pit. Presumably, I would think that the pigeons were trying to stay close and keep warm since it was pretty cold out. Occasionally, you would see humans tossing bits of breadcrumbs or other pieces of food at them, but otherwise, these pigeons kept to themselves and didn’t move around a lot. These pigeons were in a city, so their habitat was composed of having very few grassy areas and trees for them to perch in. However, these pigeons seemed well fed and didn’t seem like they were in any type of severe struggle. Chicago is close to a major body of water, so that might also be beneficial to these birds because it could give them a reliable drinking source. However, other than seeing other different species of birds, you don’t see many wild animals roaming around in cities like Chicago.
