DNA Barcoding as a supplement to field identification

Some of you may be interested in the blog post I put up today with some reflections on the Lepidoptera results from DNA barcoding of Malaise samples in my garden:

WOW, that's huge! Awesome result.

Thanks Donald for bringing us up to date with where all that trapping has led you to.
Whilst my taxonomy skills hardly exist, I am thrilled to see what can be done to a) monitor the biodiversity from a single place and b) how that complements other processes being used to better identify what we have around us. Another huge effort by you and the others involved.
Much appreciated.

8800 specimens samples - quite an effort - who paid for it?

really cool stuff; I was going to ask the same thing as Reiner - what was the overall cost of all that DNA sampling? I imagine quite pricey

It would have been pricy, but I was fortunate to be working for iBOL at the time and to have them cover the sequencing costs as part of their BIOSCAN program (effectively as an exemplar for the Australian context). I expect to pay myself for a few plates of more closely selected specimens later this year. We are increasingly at the stage though that the sequencing cost can be much more affordable using MinION technology. I have thought seriously about doing it myself. It's now the reagents and lab setup that would be the biggest hassle and cost.
