Description

Growing on a small mud island in a stream. Specimen collected and sent to Allan Herbarium (CHR 635149) where it was identified as Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus'. An escape from cultivation where it is grown as a pond/aquarium plant. This is the first known record of this species in the wild in NZ.

Description

Spiny woody sapling in a light gap near the edge of Talbot Bush, growing alongside saplings of Euonymus europaeus and Prunus sp. and bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara).

Bill Sykes and Peter Heenan have conferred and agree that it is a Berberis species, a South American species in the Berberis congestiflora group. It will be the first wild New Zealand record of whichever of these it turns out to be. Geraldine-based botanist Mike Harding collected a specimens of the same plant to lodge as a voucher specimen in CHR (CHR 616308).
