Description

Quite a fun observation.

Large group of domestic pigeons eating Celtis australis berries. They looked quite clumsy, fluttering as they reached for them. Such dispersal by pigeons would explain how commonly Celtis australis spontaneously appears in the Lyon area, since it's not native but abondantly planted.

Description

Ti kouka and kawakawa regularly fed here on by kereru, one of which was roosting in kanuka overhead at time of this observation. This dropping is dry, but a wet orange one just missed me while sitting there. - separate observations for bird and other droppings within a metre of this one

Description

Fresh kereru dropping - just missed me. Kereru observation posted separately.
What kind of seeds? An uneaten green coprosma fruit is also present, presumably fallen from a nearby tree.

This should be a separate comment really as it is not about the seeds focused on in this pbservation, but...also present within a metre of this dropping are about a dozen nikau seeds, all clean and apparently uneaten...and one bounced off the concrete beside me while I was taking these photos. There are several fruiting nikau trees about 10m away, but none uphill of here or on this concrete driveway.

Do kereru carry nikau fruit around in their crop and drop them at bedtime?
shortly after this observation, perhaps irritated by the flash of the camera (sun was starting to set) the kereru flew off into the trees, perhaps to one nearby. A soft ascending coo was heard repeatedly, never heard before, from the area of the trees nearby, along with the chorus of other birds in other trees, and background suburban traffic noise. - sound recording to be edited and uploaded.

What

Nīkau Palm (Rhopalostylis sapida)

Date

Description

Seeds mysteriously appearing on driveway - about a dozen gathered up here this evening from a couple of square metres of concrete under kanuka and in which a kereru was roosting at bedtime. Something unseen dropped with a sharp crack and bounced while I was sitting under a kanuka and totara taking photos of the kereru in the kanuka, which was still and quiet and only drawn my attention to its presence by slightly splashing me with the liquid orange dropping(image added in case it sheds light on the mystery of the nikau seeds).

Kereru feed on kawakawa fruit several times a day in this garden at present. Not yet seen in the ti kouka or karamu but karamu may be ripe nearby.

Kohuhu and totara beside the kanuka the kereru was sitting in.
Kereru and wet dropping in separate observations.
