b. manually going through all the however-many-thousand observations incorrectly identified to subspecies to correct the IDs and add this observation field to each one would be a lot of work; and
c. the other potential option for fixing large numbers of incorrect subspecies IDs - swapping commonly incorrectly-used subspecies up to species level - would cause the more specific information associated with those IDs to be lost, which would be a shame [and someone would still have to go through and add the observation field to each one]; being able to swap these commonly incorrectly-used subspecies into a subspecies group instead would preserve the intended IDs and get rid of the need to manually go through thousands of observations to add this observation field to each one.)

Would it be better if the values were formatted like e.g. "Lesser Rhea (Puna) (Rhea pennata tarapacensis/garleppi)" instead of just "Lesser Rhea (Puna)"? It wouldn't be hard to change, if people thought it would be a good idea.
