I live in the San Bernardino Mountains.... Big Bear Lake, California. I love all the outdoor activities that the area offers. Since moving here in 2011 I have noted San Bernardino Flying squirrels here and there, however this summer (2017) I have noticed more of them just hanging out at night here in my yard. I've had five at a time on the rail to my deck... they say they are very rare so why have they found my home to be very livable ??? I don't know. I feed and water them at night... they seem to love it. The raccoons give them competition for the food though. I find the San Bernardino Flying Squirrel very fascinating and have purchased a wildlife camera to record their presence and learn more about their habits. As long as they hang around I'll continue to watch, study, document them.
