Locally common in forest on either side of track. This is the narrow-leaved variety described by Thomas Cheeseman (Man. N.Z.Fl. p. 686 (1925) from the Kauaeranga Valley. Whilst I personally see it as part of the range of variation that exists in C. buddleioides it is true that plants of this species in the eastern part of its range have narrower leaves. Currently var. linearis stands as a valid taxon because no one has formally rejected it from the New Zealand Flora. A modern revision of C. buddleioides is needed.
