Outside While Inside

One of the finest features of our small house is a large screen porch. A simple structure: four-by-four posts, screen instead of walls, and a gable roof. A perfect pleasure during the temperate months. And a wonderful place to sit and visit with guests, as today with Sid Gershgoren and Eugenia McGrath, who drove down from Minneapolis for the afternoon. A way to enjoy the outside while inside.

Sid, who lives in Berkeley, California, has written some of the most imaginative and expansive poetry in English. He's also the author of the marvelously curious and vastly entertaining Extended Words: An Imaginary Dictionary (Red Dragonfly Press, 2009), a 430 page magnum opus that romps and plays just beyond the edges of the real dictionaries. Even at the age of 80, Sid remains a prolific writer. He brought two new manuscripts for me to look at today, one being a collection entitled A World-widening Catalog of Bumper Stickers.

Throughout the afternoon, during the several hours we conversed, Half-black Bumblebees worked the yellow pom-pom-like blossoms of the St Johnswort just outside the screen.
