The Eyes of Autumn

I've noticed these faces before, not really faces but masks. Silver Maple leaves when they fall, curled and upside-down, have eyes. Gaping underfoot, gazing vacantly through the bare branches above them at the empty sky, they stare quietly up from the ground at passersby. And these eyes, like all the other eyes of autumn, are secretive and filled with shadows.
