THE GILA!

A normal drive along a rocky road came to a sudden halt as the lean body of one Cody Coyote slammed the brakes on the scratched up, muddy suburban-soccer mom-style White Dodge SUV and demanded, yelled to all passengers (and any passerby for that matter, it was impeccably loud): "GET OUT NOW!"

Panicked, excited, and genuinely entirely unaware of what was going on, sweaty students piled out the van in the fastest manner possible, with no regard for the sister van a few yards ahead of them, who would miss this oh-so unmissable moment.

Gathered around Coyote, the students were barely able to focus their eyes before he took off in a mad dash towards something...A GILA MONSTER!

"There's a Gila Monster! I saw it in my rear view mirror in the bush over there I think it went this way-" The students followed until, no sooner than one magical moment, the spectacular beast was revealed.

A stout fellow, Mr. Gila casually stalked away from the group and towards another bush as the students attempted to observe it while keeping up with its pace.

"Big boi." Commented a student. The others laughed in agreement.

I wondered several things.

Why was this lizard so polite-looking?

Why did I enjoy watching its little legs quickly carry away its thiq body?

Why was something that brought us all so much joy called a monster?
