Method #2: searching plants for damage

You can search for distinctive signs of invertebrate feeding damage on your garden plants. Even if the invertebrate has gone, it's sometimes possible to identify it from its feeding.

Be sure to take photo(s) of the plant too so that can be identified. Most insects that feed on plants are relatively, or very, host specific, so knowing what the host plant is can be a big help for identifying your plant damage.
