28th November "The Rivers of DerbyShire"Audio recording (due to copyright restrictions on photos) of Dr Scott McKenzie's excellent and informative talk on 28th Nov 2020. Well worth a listen. The Rivers of Derbyshire – The good, the bad and the recovering with Scott McKenzie (an online talk Saturday 28th November 7.00pm - see zoom link below)
Derbyshire contains some wonderful and diverse rivers, ranging from the tumbling upland streams in the Dark Peak; the limestone rivers through the White Peak; through to the wide meandering lowland Derwent in the south of the county.
Many of them are packed full of native wildlife and some are even recognised for their ecological importance through SSSI designation.
It’s not all been plain-sailing, though, and some of our rivers have had a difficult past – particularly since the industrial revolution.
In his presentation Scott will talk about the diversity of rivers across the county; the importance of healthy and natural watercourses; some of the threats to our freshwater habitats – and what can be done about it.
Scott grew up in the Cheshire countryside and has always had a passion for wildlife – especially all things wet. Having never really grown out of the excitement gained from pond dipping, Scott is Living Rivers Programme Manager at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust where he drives forward improvements to the rivers of Derbyshire.
Scott’s career has been split across a number of sectors and he has worked for the Environment Agency, private environmental consultants and academic institutes – but the common thread has always been ecology and a love of being outside regardless of weather conditions. Please join us for what will be a fascinating talk.
