HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN JAMES AUDUBON! What better way to celebrate the legacy of the world’s most famous ornithologist than to go for an early morning bird photography walk! Okay, I have to admit it: although I am quite the bird nerd, I didn’t really remember that April 26 was Audubon’s birthday until around mid-day when I glanced at the Audubon bird calendar hanging next to my computer screen.
John James Audubon lived from 1785-1851. When he was in his thirties, Audubon declared his intention to document every bird in North America. Even though the camera was first invented in 1816, it was certainly not available for use during Audubon’s time. Therefore, had to paint or sketch each bird. Like most ornithologists of the time, he had to shoot a bird in order to pose it for accurate, lifelike paintings. How much easier we have it with our blazing fast digital cameras and long lenses!

When you stop to consider it, think how much of a debt is owed to Audubon by all birders, ornithologists, naturalists, nature photographers, environmentalists, and general outdoor enthusiasts. What a great day to honor the legacy of this premiere bird nerd. Get outside and take a few bird shots in honor of JJ Audubon!
