Small ape conservation project--requesting detailed data

Dear Photographer or Recorder,

Either you have added your observation of a small ape (gibbon or siamang) in Peninsular Malaysia to our project "Gibbons of Peninsular Malaysia", or we found your observation and added it ourselves. The Gibbons of Peninsular Malaysia (Ungka) project is a research and conservation project under the Malaysian Primatological Society focused on understanding and conserving Malaysian small apes. Earlier this year, our first research output was published, which may have included some of your observations (if they were submitted prior to August 2018). You can see the publication here (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ajp.23112). If you are a contributor and would like to see the manuscript, but are stopped by a paywall, please let me know, and I can email you a .pdf.

I am posting today to invite you to contribute to the next stage of our research. With support from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Habitat Foundation, and the wildlife authorities of Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN), we are compiling data to be used to create an Action Plan for the Conservation of Malaysian Small Apes. Because information about the distribution of small apes in Malaysia is limited, your observations may offer us new insight into the distribution of small apes in Malaysia. However, iNaturalist automatically obscures the location information for Endangered species unless the contributor chooses settings that allow Project Managers to access the original location information. I am writing to ask you to consider allowing us to access your original location data, either by changing your default settings to allow us access, or by sending your observation location data to us via private message.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Best wishes,
S. Lappan
