Description

Identification assisted by host association.
Emerged in a cage containing English Oak (Quercus robur) leaves infested with European Oak Leafminer (Phyllonorycter messaniella) – see this observation https://inaturalist.nz/observations/195534200 .

Description

Locality: NEW ZEALAND AK, suburb of Saint Johns, University of Auckland Tamaki Campus.

Habitat: Beaten from a cultivated tree fern, on level 1, between buildings 733 and 734.

Identification: Coccophagus philippiae (Silvestri, 1915). Male. ID based on literature (Noyes & Valentine, 1989).

Description

Two specimens in close proximity on trunk of Blue Gum.
Photo 5 gives indication of size - fingers are pointing towards specimen in upper right of photo.
Constantly moving, very rapidly, so hard to photograph.
Distinctive features include: short wings, broad flat 'thighs' on rear legs, iridescent sheen on various parts of body (see photos 2 & 3) and head/eyes (not showing in these photos).

Photos of the moths that emerged from larva collected from, and reared on Veronica stricta growing on the edge of pine plantation. Of the 11 larva collected, all pupated; three emerged as parasitoid wasps (see this observation https://inaturalist.nz/observations/66928792); the remaining eight developed as normal. First three larva pupated on the 29/9/20 and emerged on 10-12/12/20 meaning a total pupation time of 55-57 days.
